Meeting the Goals of FHWA’s Real-Time System Management Information Program

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently released a new mandate which requires all state DOTs to provide real-time traffic and travel conditions on major highways. In addition, the mandate asks the DOTs to make this information available to the traveling public before Nov. 8, 2014. The FHWA included these terms in Section 1201 of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). This section is also known as the Real-Time System Management Information Program.

There’s no question that this act will have a significant impact on the ITS industry. I, for one, am very excited about the opportunities this will bring to our state transportation agencies. ITS technology has come a long way since Daktronics entered the industry in 1988, and we’re looking forward to the technological developments which will result from SAFETEA-LU projects.

Especially with today’s budgetary challenges, state DOTs will need to work hard to meet the goals set up within Section 1201. With our economical dedicated dynamic messaging and full-color capabilities, Daktronics stands prepared to help state DOTs meet the requirements set up by the FHWA and Federal DOT.

If you work in the ITS industry, we’d love to hear what you have to say. What are your thoughts on the recent FHWA mandates? Leave your comments below.
