Got nits?

Are you using the correct terminology when discussing your display(s)? There are a lot of terms people use when talking about and comparing video displays. One term you will see on display specifications is the nit. The nit is an important term for outdoor display operators to know due to potential zoning regulations in your region.

Nit refers to a unit of luminance equivalent to one candela per square meter. In other words, it is simply a brightness or luminance measurement. At Daktronics, our displays are calibrated at specific nit levels. This is done to help control power consumption and operating temperatures.  

Brighter is not always better when it comes to playing content that will grab your audience’s attention.    In fact, overly bright displays can make the content distracting and hard to read.

Many locations around the world actually have specific zoning regulations that set the maximum amount of nits you can use during day and night.

Do you need to nitpick your nits? There are nit meters that can measure the brightness values of your display. Keep in mind, the nit values may vary depending on the weather, viewing location and time of day.  You may want to take a few measurements to be sure you are in compliance. If your display is too bright, you will want to adjust your dimming values.
