Over the past year, the NCAA and Genius Sports have collaborated on new developments transforming the landscape of sports data, specifically the collection, management and distribution of statistics and scoring data. The release started with men’s and women’s basketball championships in 2019 and includes many additional sports in later releases. The entire announcement can be read here. We have been in close contact with Genius Sports since the announcement of the NCAA partnership and are hard at work developing the tools you will need to continue your in-venue stats and scoring functions without interruption.

This summer, we’re releasing a new Data Studio interface for NCAA Volleyball, which includes the following:

  • Real-time access to NCAA LiveStats volleyball data
  • A new, more intuitive user interface, eliminating the need for profile editor
  • Seamless integration with Daktronics workflow and ability to build dynamic, data-driven graphics in Content Studio

Implementing the new interface at your site will require digital media player (DMP) 8000s and Venus Control Suite, Content Studio and Display Studio updated to the latest versions.

  1. Currently, in requested stats, there is field labeled NAME. It currently only contains player’s last name. Anyway to get that to have first and last name? Or separate fields for first & last name. And, speaking of requested stats, will that functionality be changing after migration to Genius?

    1. Hey, Tim! We spoke at the Video Summit prior to IDEA. As far as the NAME field goes, we get that field exactly as it is presented in Stat Crew: A free-form text box. As I’m sure you’re aware, how the names are entered are at the complete discretion of the SID for each school. Some use First Last. Others use Last, First. Others use LAST, First. It can vary all over the board. Via DSTI, we’ve made our best efforts to infer the first and last names from that free-form text because we know our customers want it. But it’s also an imperfect science. As of now, we infer first and last names based on the presence of a comma. If there is a comma, everything before the comma goes into a LAST NAME field and everything after the comma goes into a FIRST NAME field. If there’s no comma, the FIRST NAME field is left blank and LAST NAME is the same as NAME. Again, it’s not perfect, but it’s our best effort to deliver on a highly-requested item from our users.

As far as requested stats with Genius, nothing has changed since our conversations at IDEA. The Genius interfaces for NCAA are brand new and are works-in-progress. The method for receiving and transmitting data is fundamentally changing and some of the traditional Content Studio workflows are changing with it. We’ll be utilizing plenty of user feedback to develop the interface and workflows that best suit the needs of you and your fellow Dak operators.
