As we near the midpoint of the hockey season, SAP Center in San Jose is ready for the puck to drop on the NHL All-Star Game on January 26. The venue isn’t just the home of the San Jose Sharks. It’s also the home of 40 Daktronics LED displays totaling nearly 8,000 square feet to connect with and entertain fans.
Of those 40 displays, 17 feature a narrow pixel pitch (NPP) of 2.5-millimeter line spacing. The NPP displays were added during the 2016-17 season to bring additional branding and sponsorship opportunities to the venue for hockey and other events. At the same time, two additional marquee displays were added to the exterior of the facility to continue the branding and sponsorship efforts while also promoting upcoming events.
Now, as hockey fans enter SAP Center to see the game’s stars battle on the ice, they will be welcomed by those marquees and surrounded by event branding on those NPP screens. And when fans make their way to their seats, more LED technology will continue to ‘wow’ them as they enjoy the main event.
A four-sided centerhung LED system with three ring displays along with ribbon displays and dasher boards will bring an immersive experience during the NHL All-Star Game and additional All-Star events. Additional displays in the concourses ensure fans never miss a moment of the action when they leave their seats to head to the concession stand.
The displays are what people always see but behind the scenes, a large amount of work is being done with the control system to ensure a great game-day production. Daktronics Show Control System helps bring the magic to life for event goers.
With one-button control capability, Show Control can enable a venue to execute elaborate, multi-step synchronization to the simple push of a button. This was accomplished at SAP Center for the Sharks playoff appearance in 2018. The capability is still here for the All-Star Game as well as many other functions to keep fans engaged throughout events.
If you’re one of the lucky ones at the venue for the festivities, you’re sure to be entertained. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to see it in person, you can still follow along on the broadcast. A keen eye can catch the Daktronics displays throughout the venue on camera from the introductions and entrance sequence through the game and follow-up interviews. Either way, we’re looking forward to a great game!
